Education
Comprehensive hemp literacy, quality standards, and consumer education for the emerging Medical-Grade hemp dietary supplement industry.
What Is Medical Hemp?
Medical hemp refers to hemp-derived dietary supplement products that meet enhanced quality standards. Hemp contains less than 0.3% delta-9 THC and is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as an agricultural commodity.
Hemp contains naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Medical-Grade hemp products are non-prescription dietary supplements sold over-the-counter without physician authorization.

Key Facts
- Contains ≤0.3% delta-9 THC (dry weight basis)
- Federally legal agricultural commodity
- Non-prescription dietary supplement
- Sold over-the-counter
- No physician authorization required
- Regulated by Department of Agriculture
Understanding "Medical-Grade"
"Medical-Grade" is a market-based quality designation, NOT a medical, pharmaceutical, or controlled substance classification.
What "Medical-Grade" MEANS:
- Compliance with enhanced manufacturing, testing, and labeling standards
- Similar to quality designations like USDA Organic or medical-grade gloves
- Denotes quality without requiring prescriptions or medical oversight
- Products remain non-prescription dietary supplements
- Regulated by Department of Agriculture, not medical agencies
What "Medical-Grade" does NOT mean:
- NOT a pharmaceutical classification
- NOT a prescription requirement
- NOT a medical treatment category
- NOT a controlled substance designation
- Does NOT require physician oversight
Understanding Product Types
Learn the differences between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate products.
Full-Spectrum
Contains the naturally occurring profile of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids present in the hemp plant (≤0.3% delta-9 THC). Maintains the 'entourage effect' of multiple compounds working together.
- Natural cannabinoid profile
- Terpenes & flavonoids
- ≤0.3% THC compliant
Broad-Spectrum
Contains multiple cannabinoids and terpenes but with THC removed or reduced below detectable levels. Offers multiple compounds without detectable THC.
- THC-free or undetectable
- Multiple cannabinoids
- Terpene profile retained
Isolate
Pure CBD or other single cannabinoid in its isolated form. Contains no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or plant compounds—just the isolated compound.
- Pure single compound
- No THC
- No other cannabinoids
How to Read a COA
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document from an independent laboratory reporting batch test results. Here's what to look for:
Cannabinoid Profile
Shows CBD content, delta-9 THC (must be ≤0.3%), and other cannabinoids. Verify spectrum accuracy matches labeling.
Independent Laboratory
Must be from a third-party lab (not owned by manufacturer), ISO 17025 accredited, with demonstrated hemp testing proficiency.
Batch Number Match
The batch number on the COA should match the batch number on your product for traceability.
Contaminant Testing
Check for pesticides, heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), microbial contaminants, and residual solvents.
Testing Date
COA should be recent and within the product's shelf life. Look for clear date of testing.
Natural Variability Statement
Quality COAs acknowledge natural agricultural variability—minor variations between batches are normal and not a quality defect.
Quality & Safety Standards
AMHA advocates for rigorous testing, traceability, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to protect consumers and support quality agricultural production.
Independent Testing
Third-party ISO 17025 accredited lab testing for every batch
Seed-to-Sale Traceability
Complete tracking from cultivation through distribution
GMP Standards
Sanitation, batch control, and contamination prevention
Clear Labeling
Accurate cannabinoid content, ingredient lists, and required disclaimers
